Construction could begin in early 2026.
Norwegian company Scale42, partnering with US real-estate investment firm APL, plans to build a datasenter in Varkaus spanning 25,000-75,000 square metres. The project involves reserving the 28-hectare Ranta-Luttila plot, located north of the city near a Fingrid electricity connection point, with a transfer price exceeding €1.4 million.
The development will occur in two phases: initially a 60 MW facility, followed by a 40 MW expansion. The project could generate 50-200 jobs locally. Mayor Joonas Hänninen expressed confidence, noting the operators possess significant industry experience rather than being startups.

Scale42 intends to apply for building permits immediately upon securing the plot, with construction targeted for early 2026. The first facility should be operational by early 2027. City council approval is expected in April, with the reservation agreement deadline set for 19 June.
